Announcing the DoK Landscape

Data on Kubernetes is becoming an industry standard, the first Data on Kubernetes Report revealed that 90% of respondents believe Kubernetes is ready for stateful workloads. In the past year alone, we have seen interest in the topic of DoK explode with over 400% growth across our core channels.

We’ve covered via video interviews and blog posts countless examples of companies doing it well. Advanced users such as Dreamworks and Zalando are running thousands of databases on Kubernetes. But it’s not that easy for everyone. Our Data On Kubernetes 2021 report found that nearly a third of companies were struggling to find vendor solutions to run stateful workloads on Kubernetes.

We are thrilled to introduce the DoK Landscape project. It’s a destination for end-users to research existing Data on Kubernetes products, solutions, and consultancies.

We decided to start this project based on a need that we witnessed. End-users wanting to run their stateful infrastructure on Kubernetes not knowing where to start and more particularly which tools to use. By taking inspiration from the CNCF landscape, we came up with our own. The landscape will organize products, solutions, and services into different categories.

The landscape includes Database Data Management, Operators, Logging, Streaming, and Messaging.  To help end-users navigate the landscape, the entries are documented with metadata such as is there an operator or kubectl plugin for it? Is it OSS? Does it have commercial support? And more, to help end-users pick the right tool or service for running their stateful workloads on Kubernetes.

And the best part is that it’s just the beginning. We will continuously improve the landscape by adding more features and data. As usual, if you have any ideas or feedback, please reach out to us on Slack!
